“Government, and the Legislative Assembly of Tonga, Confirms passing of Late Member of Parliament and Former Prime Minister, Hon.Rev Dr. Pohiva Tu’i’onetoa”
It is with profound sadness that the Office of the Prime Minister of the Kingdom of Tonga, and the Office of the Lord Speaker of the Legislative Assembly of Tonga jointly acknowledge the untimely death of the Hon Rev Dr. Pohiva Tu’i’onetoa, Member of Parliament for the Tongatapu 10 Constituency and former Prime Minister of Tonga. He passed away on the 18th of March (US Time) in California, United States of America.
The Hon Rev Dr. Pohiva Tu’i’onetoa was elected as a Member of Parliament in the General Election of 2014. He was appointed as Prime Minister of Tonga on 8th October 2019, as the 17th Prime Minister of Tonga. He was also appointed as Minister Responsible for Public Enterprises.
In the late Prime Minister Samuela ‘Akilisi Pohiva’s Government, Hon Rev Dr. Pohiva Tu’i’onetoa served as Minister for the then Ministry of Labour, Commerce, and Industries (now the Ministry of Trade and Economic Development); Minister of Police, Prison, Fire Services. He became Minister of Revenue and Customs up to September 2017.
He was later appointed as Minister of Finance and National Planning in January 2018.
The late Hon Rev Dr. Pohiva Tu’i’onetoa was made a Fellow of the Institute of Certified Management Accountants of Australia (FCMA) in 2021.
The Prime Minister, the Hon. Hu’akavameiliku, and the Lord Speaker, Fakafanua, extend their deepest sympathies and heartfelt condolences on behalf of His Majesty’s Government, and the Legislative Assembly of Tonga, to the late Member of Parliament and former Prime Minister’s family.
